Key Concepts

This module introduces essential terminology and concepts that will be used throughout your study of women's history and interpretive biography.

Symbolic Power
The capacity to shape perceptions, define categories, and influence social reality through cultural and symbolic means. For women in history, this often manifested through religious authority, royal patronage, or cultural production.
Cultural Grounding
The practice of interpreting historical figures within their own cultural frameworks rather than applying modern or Western assumptions. This requires understanding kinship systems, religious beliefs, and social structures of the time.
Interpretive Biography
A method of biographical writing that goes beyond facts to explore meaning, context, and cultural significance. It requires balancing scholarly rigor with narrative engagement.
Primary Source
Original materials created at the time under study, such as letters, inscriptions, legal documents, or oral traditions. Analyzing primary sources requires attention to context, bias, and silences.
